The warehouse logistics in the pharmaceutical industry is in continuous development. The solutions offered for the automated vertical storage, preservation and distribution of pharmaceutical products aim to reduce the management criticalities that have always characterized this area, particularly with regard to certain restrictions imposed by the market and specific legal norms .

The most important challenges of warehouse logistics for the pharmaceutical industry include:

  • Storage and proper preservation of medicines (bulky products, fragile products, refrigerated products, narcotic medicines)
  • Diversity of the range of pharmaceuticals and medicines on the market
  • "Limited" order processing time
  • Collection and distribution of the drugs.

What does pharmaceutical logistics mean?

Logistics in the pharmaceutical industry relates to different contexts, e.g. B. pharmaceutical companies and laboratories or physical pharmacies, pharmacies within hospitals or the increasingly popular online drug trade. Online pharmacies in particular are driving the exponential development of this type of trade.

According to the data presented by IQVIA, an international reference in the processing and analysis of health data and in the development of technologies for evolution in health and medicine, at the end of March, online sales of medicines in Italy are expanding: in the last year ( from February 2020 to February 2021) there was a 71% increase in revenue with an 84% increase in sales volume.

Using data from the "e-Pharmacy Market" report published by Global Market Insights in December 2020, "The global online pharmaceuticals market reached US $ 60.7 billion in 2019. [...] And it is expected to reach $ 149.4 billion (USD) by 2026, with a CAGR * of 14.3% for 2020-2026 ”.

* Compound Annual Growth Rate - one of the most widely used metrics to calculate the growth of a given value over a given period of time.

Each of the previously mentioned contexts of use has its own characteristics and needs, to which the warehouse logistics systems respond in a targeted manner with technologically innovative and progressive warehouse and distribution solutions.
