Microbiome Therapies are Viable Alternatives to Antibiotics, with Substantial Therapeutic Potential

Comments · 25 Views

The term microorganisms was perceived to be synonymous to harmful, disease causing agents, until the discovery of certain beneficial microbial colonies in the human system.

Currently, humans and a variety of species of bacteria, yeast and protozoa, are known to co-exist in mutually beneficial relationships. Moreover, it is estimated that the human microbiota consists of about 100 trillion microorganisms; it is interesting to note that this figure significantly outnumbers the total number of cells in the human body.

Currently, microbiome-based products that have been approved in the US are FMTs, and probiotic and prebiotic supplements / medical food; of this, probiotics / prebiotics are the most commonly available formulations in the market as they do not require marketing approval from the regulatory agencies.

In recent years, probiotic and prebiotic formulations are also being developed for therapeutic purposes (treatment of different diseases or disorders). However, in order to reach the market, such drugs must provide evidence for their safety and efficacy through clinical trials as well as adhere to the stringent requirements laid down by the different regulatory agencies.

Although, it is established that the natural microbiota is an essential component of human health, the full spectrum of human diseases related to the imbalance of the microflora is still unknown. Approaches that modify natural formulations by adding or removing individual microbes or entire microbial communities have been shown to have a significant impact on the health of an individual.

In fact, in an interview with the senior scientist of microbiome company, he stated that, “One of the primary reasons for studying the human microbiome is to determine whether it is the cause of a problem or a potential solution. In fact, we believe that the microbiome may hold the answer to why a particular therapy is effective for one person and ineffective for another. In order to address the aforementioned queries, the microbiome is being explored as a personalized therapeutic solution. It is important to note that the process of treating a disease may change once we develop a better understanding of how the microbiome affects the host (patient) and identify the target enzymes involved.”
