2K unveiled The City, NBA 2K21's new Neighborhood for next-gen consoles, in a trailer, and here are all the details revealed by Visual Concepts executive producer Erick Boenisch:
When we designed NBA 2K14 for the next-gen consoles of the day, we introduced “Le Parc”. We wanted to create a competitive online basketball environment that would allow the growing community of NBA 2K fans to compete outside of the authentic NBA experience. NBA 2K players could use their MyPLAYER character in a whole new location that allowed them to compete against friends or even complete strangers. Like when you step into a playground for a quick match or wait your turn in your local Rec Center, the Park was our version of the improvised match and that unique, competitive vibe.
Over the past seven years, it has evolved a lot and features that enrich the online experience have been added, especially in the NBA 2K21 MyTeam. The Park experience evolved as the NBA 2K community grew to become the Neighborhood that has established itself as the most popular part of our game over the years. We are very proud of what we have succeeded in building and we are amazed every day by the competitive spirit and creativity that our fans show in this small world.
Here's a quick overview of the City: imagine a map much, much larger than our previous neighborhoods. The look of a modern metropolis, with its skyscrapers, grand squares and even downtown. Oh, and there you will find four distinct sectors, controlled by four rival affiliations. Yes, I take this opportunity to proudly announce that affiliations are making a comeback! I will give you more details about this a little later. For now, let's continue to visualize what this City will look like.
This is our most ambitious version of a virtual community yet. We're still stunned by how many different buildings and basketball courts we've managed to fit into the map.
Let's talk about the main elements of the City and their functions:
Rookieville: Rookieville docks are located on the waterfront, south of town. Rookieville is exactly what you think it is and so this is where your journey will begin. MyPLAYER characters ready to explore the City will first have to prove themselves against other rookies. Meet the required conditions and the gates of the City will open before you. Let's go see what awaits you on the other side ...
Neighborhoods: As mentioned above, affiliations are finally making a comeback in NBA 2K21. Each of them will have their own dedicated space in the north, south, east and west sections of the City. Each district offers its basketball courts (decorated in the colors and with the logos of the affiliations). You will also find in each affiliation a warehouse that houses a basketball court where you will discover new progression features for your MyPLAYER character. We will talk about it a little later!
Events Center: In the heart of the City, you will discover our brand new event center, which shines like a beacon and will be visible from all other neighborhoods. The interior of this futuristic monolith is just as bright. The grounds and walls are lined with dynamic LED screens and lighting options that will change the mood of the place. Classic and never-before-seen events will take place indoors, as well as special intra-affiliate competitions.
Garage Hoops: Exploration is an integral part of the City. If you are attentive, you will see basketball hoops attached to the walls of certain buildings all over the City. If you find one, don't hesitate to get your ball out for a few shots. If another player walks past and sees you shooting, they may decide to join you on the field. You will then have the possibility to quickly launch a match in 1 against 1, 2 against 2, 3 against 3, a game of H.O.R.S.E., etc. Simple but effective. And as a bonus, these lands will allow you to earn huge NBA 2K21 VC multipliers every day in your first five matches! This is the perfect place to start your days off and warm up for the big events taking place on your affiliate's grounds.
Town Residents: Continuing on the exploration theme, you will find quest / objective granting NPCs throughout the Town. If you've played an RPG before, you won't have any trouble spotting them. These are the figures topped with colored exclamation marks. Every 4 to 6 weeks, new objectives will be proposed.
