Teaching Children About Yellow Color

The color "yellow" is a color synonymous to summer because it reminds of the big, bright sun shining above, giving warmth and sending children outside to play. Sunflowers and yummy lemonades are yellow. You can explore with your group this wonderful colour as you participate in your summer activities.

Mr Sun

Have some sun-shaped cut-outs using yellow construction papers and hide them around the room or outdoors in the yard. Let the children go on a "sun search" to find as many sun shapes as they can and they have to continue searching until all the suns have been found.

After searching, let them decorate the suns they have found. They can decorate these with crayons, markers, sequins, faux jewels or anything that shines and dazzles.

Loads of Lemons

Printing

Cut the lemons in half and place a few folded paper towels in a shallow pan to make a pad. Then, pour yellow tempera paint on top and add a few drops of lemon extract (found in the spice section of your local grocery store). Let the children dip the lemon into the paint and press down onto a sheet of paper to make prints. You can use a dark sheet of construction paper to have a great contrasting effect to the bright yellow prints. Smell the lemon scent!!

Make Lemonade

Exercise those little hands as you squeeze lemons together and the reward is a thirst quenching drink that is sure to please any child on a hot summer day!

You will need:

  • 1 part fresh lemon juice
  • 1 part sugar
  • 5 parts water
  • serving pitcher
  • ice

What to do:

  1. Show children how to squeeze lemons and encourage them to try on their own
  2. Check the taste of the this juice whether it is sweet or sour
  3. Let the children mix all the ingredients in a pitcher and stir well
  4. Pour the lemonade drinks into cups of ice
  5. Then ask the children the things about the lemonade such as its colour, fruit source, taste, etc.

The World in Yellow

Stroll with the children and search for yellow objects such as flowers, animals, signs, vehicles, buildings, and so on and take photos of these. After taking a walk, discuss about the yellow things that have seen and invite them to draw the yellow things they saw.

Make Sunflowers

Have each child to paint a small yellow paper plate and put pieces of yellow tissue paper on it which will create a petal appearance. When dried, give the children sunflower seeds to glue at the center of the plate and staple two giant green construction papers at the bottom which will serve as leaves. These flower decorations are great for your room or they can use these as summer home-decoration in their respective houses.

Play Games with Children that Involve Colours

Let the players form a line and all facing the leader. The leader will call the name of one player, he will either toss, roll, or bounce the ball to him and that player will catch the ball and returns it to the leader. You may use a yellow beach ball or other large ball for this activity.

Since play is the best child learning tool for a child, we use fun activities and projects to teach them.

We at Hatchlings Early Learning Centre will strive to prepare your child for all future challenges ahead, teach important values and live in harmony with each other.
