The Ottoman domination in the Mediterranean was established by Hayreddin Barbarossa, and it lasted until the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Despite their setback at Lepanto, the Ottomans rebuilt their fleet swiftly, capturing Cyprus and other lands in Morea and Dalmatia from the Republic of Venice between 1571 and 1572, and retaking Tunisia from Spain in 1574.
